Gowanus Canal Revitalization, New York
Gowanus is a neighborhood in the center of Brooklyn, located between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens. It is known for being a shared space by industry, manufacturing, arts studios and residential use. Parking lots, warehouses and industrial buildings highlight on the overall view. The canal history dates to mid-19th century. With the continuous development of the city of Brooklyn, what then was a marsh land was transformed into a canal to promote industrial and commercial growth. Waste from the industries continuously contaminated the canal, and it became one of the most polluted sites in the whole country. In 2010, the canal was designated a superfund site and is now being cleaned up. With natural disasters becoming more frequent, it is important to change the dependence on a centralized power supplier, and invest in local and more resilient ways of energy generation.
